How to Plan a Forest Wedding in Arkansas

A forest wedding asks for less decoration and more attention. The trees do the work; your job is to choose the right season, the right time of day, and a venue that can hold you if the weather turns.

The four Arkansas seasons, ranked for weddings

• October (best). Peak fall color in the Ozarks runs mid-October to early November. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, low humidity. Books out 12 months in advance.
• Late April – early May. Dogwoods and redbuds in bloom, forest fully leafed out, temperatures in the 70s. The most romantic light of the year.
• Late September. Summer humidity has broken, color is starting. A calmer alternative to peak October.
• December. Bare trees, soft golden light, indoor reception by the fire. Beautiful for a small wedding.
• Summer (avoid for outdoor ceremonies). July and August are humid; plan a morning ceremony or move indoors.

Time of day matters more than season

The hour before sunset is golden hour, and in the forest it's something else entirely, light filtering sideways through the trees. Schedule your ceremony to end 30 minutes before sunset. You'll get portraits, a candlelit reception, and the magic hour all in one window.

Always have a covered backup

The Ozarks get pop-up rain in spring and fall. Don't book a venue that doesn't have an equally beautiful covered space within walking distance. A barn, a great room with a fireplace, or a covered deck all work. The worst forest wedding plans are the ones with no plan B.

Choose a venue your guests can stay at

Forest weddings are usually intimate, and intimate weddings work best when guests don't have to drive home in the dark.
