Eureka Springs Fall Foliage Weekend

The Ozarks hit peak color about a week later than New England and a week earlier than the Smokies, and they do it with fewer tour buses. Eureka Springs in late October is the kind of weekend you build a calendar around.

When to come

Peak color in this part of the Ozarks runs roughly October 20 through November 5, weather depending. Earlier if it's been cold and dry, later if it's been warm. Mid-week stays are about half as crowded and twice as photogenic.

What to do across two nights

• Day one: drive in, sauna and cold plunge round at sunset, dinner at one of the local restaurants downtown.
• Day two: trail loop in the morning, Beaver Lake or the scenic byway in the afternoon, fireside on the deck.
• Day three: one more trail walk, late checkout when we can.

The drives worth doing

The Pig Trail Scenic Byway south of Eureka Springs is the headline ride. The road around Beaver Lake is the quieter alternative. Both top out under 90 minutes round-trip.
